Dead Man’s Hand

Two couples are lured to a remote Italian villa by a mystery Greek gentleman. The couples do not know eachother and who is the Italian estate agent who turns up on their doorstep? A murder, (or is it two?) quickly follows. But the plot soon takes a very unusual turn and further murders ensue. All is revealed in a final un-guessable twist!

Off the Cuff Theatre Company – recently formed by MADS’ veteran Barry Lambert with several friends from various other companies - entertained. We were transported to a smart house in London and to a cottage on Dartmoor (with the absolute minimum of scenery change – who needs complicated scenery? “Intruder” was a superbly crafted piece showcasing Marion Barker, with Steve Jones as the eponymous ‘gentleman burglar’ and was written and directed by Barry.

The second play was “What shall we do with the Body?” by Rae Shirley, also directed by Barry, and featuring Jill Fortune, Lisa Ray and Graham Dunning. Technical support was provided by Ian Fortune.

Both plays were previewed at the Spread Eagle Pub & Theatre, Katherine Street, Croydon, and “Body” was entered in the Southern Counties Drama Festival and received compliments from the Adjudicator.

Brother and sister Martin and Hilda Massie live together, leading a quiet, Christian existence in the confines of the Bluebell Hill Development. Just as they are preparing for a housewarming gathering, their peace is shattered by a young trespasser in their garden. The Massies' neighbours congregate in their living room and together they agree to form a neighbourhood watch group to safeguard against further incidents. But after the Massies' beloved garden gnome Monty is thrown through their window, matters swiftly escalate, complicated by Martin's burgeoning romance with Amy, wife of Gareth, who was formerly involved with Luther, husband of Magda…

Performed by MADS on the MOVE, our outreach arm, this was an charity event in co-operation with St Mark's Players and supporting 'Dyscover' which provides long-term support and opportunities to people with aphasia and their families. The audience was entertained by a one act play and a 'miscellany' of sketches, songs, prose and poetry as well as a Lindy Hop demonstration from Swing Thing. Click here for more info
